Birth Trauma Prevention: The Caregiver Vital Sign You Can't Afford to Skip
After witnessing countless moments of triumph and tragedy in the delivery room, Mandy Irby has seen firsthand the critical role nurses play in shaping birth experiences.
This keynote was inspired by a crucial question: “Can we truly prevent birth trauma?”
In this enlightening talk, Mandy redefines nervous system dysregulation as a vital sign that caregivers cannot ignore in birth trauma prevention. She challenges the status quo, revealing the misconceptions and obstacles that keep nurses in cycles of toxic stress and limit their impact.
Mandy sheds light on what’s missing when nurses feel they can do more but don’t know how, and introduces sustainable care practices that support both patients and nurses. This keynote dares your audience to transform birth care culture for generations to come.
Attendees will:
- Recognize nervous system regulation as a vital sign and implement practical tools for showing up authentically and grounded.
- Identify the misconceptions and obstacles that keep nurses trapped in cycles of toxic stress, and learn practical strategies to interrupt these patterns for both their own wellbeing and improved patient care.
- Apply sustainable trauma-informed practices that transform birth experiences and work to mitigate birth-related trauma in a variety of perinatal settings.

Nurses are the backbone of birth care, but too often, they’re running on empty—physically, mentally, and emotionally. After years as a Labor & Delivery nurse, Mandy knows what it feels like to love the job but struggle with the emotional weight of it all. She’s been there—questioning whether she could keep going, feeling the frustration of a system that doesn’t always support the well-being of the very people keeping it running.
That turning point led her to Trauma-Informed Care, not just as a way to improve patient outcomes, but as a tool to transform the nursing experience itself. By integrating emotional safety and neurosomatic practices into birth work, she saw real changes—less stress, stronger teamwork, and a healthier work environment.
Now, Mandy works with hospitals, nurse leaders, and nurse teams to bring Trauma-Informed Care into the heart of maternal health. Her keynotes and trainings offer real-world strategies to reduce burnout, improve retention, and create a culture where both nurses and patients feel supported. Because when nurses thrive, patient care improves.
Perinatal nurses have the potential to change birth culture for generations!
And that’s what brought nurses into this profession in the first place!
But their nervous systems need a break, not another nap.
If you’re looking for a speaker who gets what your team is facing and offers practical, sustainable solutions for nurse wellness and better birth care, Mandy Irby is the one to call.
The Birth Nurse is cited in the AIM Safe Reduction of Primary Cesarean Birth Change Package, published by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
