Meet Mandy (she/her)

Mandy Irby is a board-certified labor nurse with 12 years of experience supporting survivors of assault and trauma through pregnancy, birth planning, and at their bedside during childbirth and pregnancy loss.

Mandy is an international educator through her online, on-demand childbirth ed classes and community exclusively for nurses to shed the shame they feel towards themselves for not protecting their patients and providing education to change the very system L&D nurses were setup to fail in.

As a creative educator, in all her free time, Mandy co-authored Amazon best-seller, Baby Got VBAC.  Many know her through her wildly popular, tongue-in-cheek social media platforms.

Bridget Brodie (she/her)

Bridget is a board-certified lactation consultant and nurse making home visits to the Roanoke, Virginia area and providing virtual consultations. 

Before becoming an IBCLC, Bridget worked as a nurse assistant and RN on a Mother/Baby unit in a hospital in Arlington, Virginia for seven years. Seeing parents fall in love with their new baby was incredible. She then spent a year as an IBCLC in a hospital in Loudoun County, Virginia, supporting parents prenatally, throughout their hospital stay, and after they went home in our outpatient lactation clinic. 

Bridget is now a postpartum bedside nurse at a community hospital and continues home visits with her Happy Lactation prenatal and postpartum clients.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

  1. summarize each of the 5 principles of trauma-informed care as they relate to lactation support
  2. define informed decision making in your own words in the context of lactation support in the perinatal period
  3. demonstrate trauma-informed patient education on lactation basics: skin-to-skin, hand expression, and latch basics as evidenced by group discussion and role play practice.
  4. choose a trauma-informed action step within their scope to support every patient on their unique lactating journey based on the Empower the Parent, Empower the Nurse action plan.
