The Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring course expands on knowledge and physiological principles presented in the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. This course uses a case study approach to support analysis of complicated patient clinical information and tracings.
The course emphasizes the physiology of fetal-maternal oxygenation, instrumentation, interpretation of tracings and the selection of interventions as well as communication and documentation techniques.

Learning objectives:
- Describe physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer as they apply to principles of fetal heart monitoring.
- Appraise the fetal response to maternal pathological and physiological adaptations during the labor process.
- Analyze complex case studies and tracings using standardized terminology.
- Apply perinatal risk management principles, communication techniques and documentation strategies to complex and challenging patient care scenarios
7 nursing contact hours / 7 CME credit available through January 31, 2025 (0.75 hours may be used towards pharmacology hours)

Meet Paula (she/her)
Paula Rojas Landivar, MSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, an immigrant from Ecuador raised in Ohio, is a dedicated and highly experienced nurse who currently works at the bedside in labor and delivery and special care nursery. With a master’s degree in nursing education, Paula brings 18 years of bedside experience and 10 years as a nurse educator to her roles, which include professional development specialist, nurse residency curriculum author, and simulation coordinator. She is also credentialed as an ACLS, NRP, STABLE, and AWHONN FHM program instructor.
Paula’s areas of expertise encompass interdisciplinary trauma-informed clinical professional development, trauma-informed bedside perinatal care, obstetric emergency response, fetal heart monitoring interpretation, and patients’ rights advocacy. Her consulting experience includes serving as a content reviewer for AWHONN’s fetal heart monitoring program updates, curriculum design with a trauma-responsive framework, and supporting novice scholars in developing conference podium and poster presentations.
