Birth Nurse Financial Transparency Statement
updated 3/7/2022
Throughout the development of the Trauma-Informed Birth Nurse program, of paramount importance to the co-creators is that we model transparency in how we lead and develop courses. We have fielded several questions about the cost of the course and want to explain the collaborative effort that is present.
In the creation of this course we knew we wanted to center the diverse perspectives of birthing people, and that to do that ethically we must ensure adequate financial compensation. We are thrilled to be able to share the stories of 10 parent experts as we work to grow our appreciation for a variety of lived experiences. Furthermore, we have partnered with renowned birthcare change agents and educators to bring their expertise to this course. All educators are compensated upfront for their contribution and on an ongoing basis through revenue sharing.
Through our funding partnership with Your BIRTH Partners, a non-profit organization, we were able to launch this course with upfront payments to our educators. They remain committed to further growth and increased accessibility to the TIBN program.
We also acknowledge that tremendous financial inequity exists across the spectrum of nursing and we are eager to ensure that financial limitations do not preclude involvement in TIBN programs. Healthcare facilities working to improve perinatal health outcomes are encouraged to prioritize trauma-informed care as a foundational healthcare framework. As many as 1 in 3 births in the United States have been described as traumatic by birthing people. A meta-analysis of risk factors for postpartum PTSD revealed that the perceived quality of interactions with obstetrical care providers during labor and delivery was a significant predictor.
Trauma-informed care can also help reduce burnout among health care providers, potentially reducing staff turnover. The TIBN team encourages perinatal healthcare departments to offer TIBN to their whole team through a corporate licensing agreement. We also provide staff nurses with a reimbursement request letter to facilitate financial reimbursement by their employer.
We offer a variety of scholarship opportunities, and are thrilled to have been able to offer 25 scholarships to date.
It is important to us that as we continue to grow and expand we are financially prepared to bring in additional educators, units, and resources to add value to TIBN. Thank you for being a part of this community.
