I Never Really Liked Kids

I never really liked kids.

Sure, they looked cute (in photos), and they said funny things (on YouTube), and I liked holding babies (while they slept), but honestly they terrified and intimated me. Even now I wonder if my newborn daughter can see dead people.

Maybe I babysat too many when I was younger (the entrepreneur in me loved the tax-free cash). My friends’ kids were definitely more manageable in my mind, because I knew their story (and their handlers were always close by). I felt that most kids, however, were messy, loud, and unpredictable.
When I expressed the hesitation of having children of my own, I always heard, “Oh yeah, but you’ll like your own.” Luckily they were right

Before I had kids, I wasn’t around any long enough to really learn from them. I think when you’re around your own kids long enough, they break you.

Really. I feel broken….a lot.

But they’re still there. Every morning. Waking up and waking you up. (Mine don’t ever sleep in. Come on!)
Instead of being owned by these tiny little mind benders, I’m trying to beat them at their own game. (That sounded less cruel in my mind.) I’m learning how to climb again, be surprised, explore, listen to the sounds, feel the rain, and LEAP again (who leaps anymore?!)!! Trying not to break everyday is actually turning out to be a bit magical.

Kids still smell funny, have zero personal boundaries, and are mostly terrifying in their ignorant genius, but I think the parents are the smartest masterminds of all. We learn to enjoy life’s simplicities if we learn to bend without breaking.
